I went to Cuba with the notion that I was going to capture, or somehow see reflected, the epitome of American culture during the roaring 20’s to the nifty 50’s. I was not going as an egocentric American tourist. I was determined to experience Cuba not from tourist’s eyes but from a cultural vantage point where the struggles, the pride, the happiness and hopelessness become visceral. A place where the sun shines radiantly, the Cohiba smoke swirls from the hot ash, and rum flows like mountain water.

Because it is complicated, I arrived at an artistic decision to depict the propaganda that overlays the prosperous epoch.
